An Unforgettable Snowmobile Adventure in Orillia with On Snow Magazine
At On Snow Magazine, we live for the thrill of the trails, the crisp winter air, and the stories that unfold when you rev up your sled. Recently, our STV crew took on the stunning Orillia district and surrounding areas—think Coldwater, Oro-Medonte, and the shimmering shores of Orillia Lake—for an epic snowmobile journey that’s got us buzzing. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or dreaming of your first trip, buckle up and join us as we share the highlights of this unforgettable adventure, packed with insider tips to fuel your next getaway.
Kicking Off in the Heart of Lake Country
Our journey began in Severn Township, where the trails were calling our name. Orillia’s prime location in Lake Country makes it the ultimate home base for snowmobile adventures. With nearly 220 km of freshly groomed trails, courtesy of the hardworking volunteers at the Orillia District Snowmobile Club, this region is a rider’s paradise. What makes it even better? It’s just a couple of hours from the GTA, so you can pack in a full day of riding—or a whole weekend—without the long haul. Norm York, one of the club’s dedicated volunteers, summed it up perfectly: “Families can come, enjoy the trails, and head home without needing a massive trek. It’s a real opportunity.”
Our mission? To explore the hidden hotspots, soak in breathtaking views, and make planning your snowmobile trip as easy as a smooth ride on a powder day. And trust us, Orillia delivers.
Casino Rama Resort: Where Trails Meet Luxury
First stop: Casino Rama Resort, a gem nestled in the heart of Rama First Nation. This isn’t just a place to crash—it’s a full-on experience. Picture this: you ride right up to the resort from the B Trail on the east side of Lake Couchiching, park your sled in their dedicated lot, and step into a world of comfort. With 300 hotel rooms, a pool, spa, and saunas, it’s the perfect spot to unwind after a day carving through the snow. Glenn Trivett, VP of Operations and a fellow snowmobiler, told us, “We’re proud to welcome sledders with tremendous amenities for families and friends alike.”
Hungry? Choose from fine dining at their high-end steakhouse, slurp noodles at Chow Lucky Noodle Bar, or grab a quick coffee and donut at Tim Hortons. For the adults, the casino offers over 1,600 slots, 40 tables, and a 5,000-seat theater hosting big names in music and comedy. Whether you’re relaxing in the spa, catching a live show, or trying your luck, Casino Rama blends trail-side convenience with top-notch entertainment. It’s no wonder it’s earned its rep as Ontario’s premier destination for snowmobilers looking to play and stay in style.
Trails That Steal the Show
The trails in Orillia and Lake Country? Pure magic. Thanks to the Orillia District Snowmobile Club’s three groomers working overtime, we rode some of the best conditions in the province. From Severn to Oro-Medonte, the trails connect picturesque spots with short, family-friendly distances, so you’ve got plenty of time to stop, snap photos, or warm up by a fire with a hot chocolate. Norm and Rob, two of the club’s stellar volunteers, guided us through the network, ensuring we hit all the right turns—and had a blast doing it. (Okay, we might have had a moment where a sled got stuck, but let’s just say it added to the adventure!)
What sets these trails apart is their variety. Want a scenic cruise? You’ve got it. Craving a quick loop before dinner? No problem. The proximity of destinations means you can mix riding with exploring local gems without feeling rushed. And with sponsors like Camso, Yamaha, and Timax keeping the trails in top shape, you’re in for a smooth, thrilling ride every time.
Local Flavors at Couchiching Brewery and Copper Nuts
No snowmobile trip is complete without a taste of the local scene, and Orillia’s got plenty to savor. We swung by Couchiching Brewery in Coldwater, a must-visit for riders looking to refuel. Their craft beers, inspired by the region’s spirit, hit the spot after a long day on the trails. From bold IPAs to smooth stouts, there’s a brew for every taste, paired with a hearty menu of sandwiches and fresh local fare. It’s the kind of place where you kick back, swap trail stories, and maybe grab some swag to rep the vibe. We left with full bellies and big smiles—definitely a spot to add to your ride plan.
Then there’s Copper Nuts, a family-owned gem that’s been roasting handcrafted nuts since 2009. With nearly 20 flavors, these treats are the perfect trail snack or post-ride indulgence. Started right in Coldwater, it’s a true grassroots success story that adds heart to the region’s charm. Trust us, one bite, and you’ll be hooked.
Horseshoe Valley Resort: A Winter Playground
Next, we headed to Horseshoe Valley Resort, a snowmobiler’s dream with direct trail access from trails 420 and 421. Amber Curry, Director of Sales, welcomed us to this “Winter Wonderland,” and she wasn’t kidding. With sled parking right at the base, you can roll up, grab a bite at their Crazy Horse restaurant, or warm up by the fire on the après patio. The resort’s 101 rooms and two-bedroom condos make it ideal for groups or families, and the trails lead you straight into adventure.
Horseshoe isn’t just about snowmobiling—though the access to pristine trails is a major win. You’ve got 29 ski and snowboard runs, tubing, snowshoeing, fat biking, and cross-country skiing for the whole crew. Rather relax? Their luxurious spa has you covered. We stayed at the Best Western nearby, another trail-accessible spot that made hopping on our sleds a breeze. Whether you’re tearing up the trails or sipping hot cocoa by the fire, Horseshoe Valley is a one-stop shop for winter fun.
Learning the Ropes with Smart Adventures
For riders looking to build skills or introduce newbies to the sport, Smart Adventures at Horseshoe Valley is a game-changer. Tyler and his team offer snowmobile training for ages six and up, with patient, passionate instructors who make learning a blast. We got the full experience: a rundown on the sleds, practice with brakes and controls, and a guided tour through freshly groomed private trails. From stop-and-go drills to cruising on a Yamaha 200, it was a confidence-boosting thrill that left us grinning. Check them out at www.smartadventure.com if you’re ready to ride with swagger.
